Canton,China
Canton derives it's name from Canton China. How is this possible? Remember the year 1780, Captain John O'Donnell arrived in Baltimore to trade and eventually to settle. He had been a Captain in the East India Merchant Service and brought with him goods from the Far East Indies. His ship "Pallas" had a full cargo which he had no problem selling to the local residents Travel back then took months on the high seas. Picture on the Map the distance from the East Indies to the Baltimore Inner Harbot and appreciate what was accomplished by the strong hearted individuals in that century. He purchased eventually about 3000 acres in Canton. The Port of preference was Fells Point because the deep water was here. The Inner Harbor did not exist. It was nothing but swamp area and very shallow water. Captain O"Donnell made a decision to settle in the Canton Area and was the right decision that will be explained as we go along with the History of this Region. Canton,USA owed it's namesake to Canton China (Guangzhou) is a Delta Port in the Pearl River near Hong Kong. #1 Ray Bahr MD
